I have seen my fair share of studio sessions, from underground rappers to multi-platinum recording artists. While there is always a lot going on at once, the one thing that I have noticed a lot is someone in there fake nodding -- the one who is on the couch in the corner dancing along as if they are listening to the best song in the world when they know it's far from it, simply because they think that is what they are supposed to be doing. In my eyes, the over-enthusiasm serves as an easy sign of validation to all egos involved, so it becomes a safe, go-to reaction.
As my old boss, an artist manager who has had the privilege of representing some of the top hip-hop artists of this generation, saw me re-reading this before I posted it, he mentioned that sometimes if he is nodding (even if he does't particularly care for the song overall,) it might be just because of the beat. I agree, it is a natural human response to move and/or react when we hear music. But I'm talking about the clear cases of hyping things up for the sake of solidifying what someone thinks the artist wants to hear. Not everyone is an expert, and not all opinions are warranted, but learn to be honest and offer value as a listener.
I understand that everyone has their own taste and opinions, but be honest and become aware of this often subconscious habit of jumping on whatever 'yes man' bandwagon that loads up each time a decision or opinion is needed on something. Always keep in mind people’s ideas, and ESPECIALLY their art, is very sacred and personal, so I am in no way encouraging people to be disrespectful in their critiques. The "I'm an artists and I'm sensitive about my shit" sentiment is very real and should always be kept in mind and respected. However, if someone trusts and respects you enough to come to you for artistic or business-related advice, reciprocate that respect by giving feedback that is your honest opinion and that you feel is most beneficial to all involved.
Moral of the story: Nobody needs a Yes Man. I am a firm believer that some of the most successful artists, people and businesses are products of a strong and diverse team. You have to always surround yourself with not only individuals that are better than you in their respective fields, but also have your best interest at heart. In the end, nobody benefits from you giving a fake cosign.
