This has been one of my favorite songs of Summer 2017. Goldlink, Brent Faiyaz and Shy Glizzy provide a fun and energetic song that in my eyes will forever be a bop. The song itself is about the age-old tale of the girl that starts paying you attention only after you’ve been put on, but Faiyaz’s vocals on hook are so smooth, you’re going to close your eyes and dance along even if you can’t relate. Goldlink began referring to his sound as “future bounce” early on, and has been developing that sound – influenced by go-go music from his hometown of D.C. – throughout the years as he continued to develop as an artist. Those influences of go-go and funk provide the overarching inspiration for his major label debut album, At What Cost, a project that delves into the gentrification of his hometown in hopes of providing a story through music of the changes happening to preserve the history from the perspective of the voices that are often lost in translation.
I'm also going to put this BBC Radio 1 Piano Session he did with Hare Squead and Masego (with Dom Whalley on the piano) down here because I think it is incredible/beautiful.
