Everyone loves the radio hit First Day Out from Tee Grizzley, but his debut mixtape My Moment if filled with motivational anthems, in true Detroit fashion. The first time I heard the young rapper was on the radio when I was back home in Detroit for the holidays (Thanksgiving I believe) and as soon as I heard “Joy Road b*tch, but the money long as 6 mile…” followed by the beat switch up/drop, I knew it would be hearing this repeatedly throughout the city any and every time I was home from that point on – but I won’t lie and say I expected it to have so much crossover and commercial success. Detroit music has a specific sound, tempo, flow, etc. and much of the subject matter, while sometimes broadly in line with urban experiences throughout the country, is usually very Detroit specific. I was happy to hear people everywhere (from the club to celebrities’ social media) enjoying the hit, and to hear the familiar sound outside of the city. I am not sure what the general consensus was on Tee Grizzley, or how much people were willing to venture to explore his music past what was popular at the moment, but My Moment really does highlight amazing storytelling that offers insight and motivation, even if it is not presented in the traditional sense. One of my favorites in Overlapped, because I like songs that put you in a good mindset – the kind of music you can put on when you are in a mood (whether it be doubt, heartbreak, fear, excitement, motivated, etc.) and it can immediately get you out of it, or amplify it depending on the context. Overlapped does that for me, but feel free to listen for yourself.
